I fucken LOVE old classic Japanese monster movies!!!!
Recently I acquired all 7 of the "1st wave" of Gamera movies on DVD, they are all widescreen with English subtitles and pristine quality! (I ordered the boxset from Monsters In Motion!). Each of them is fucking unique and a total buzz to watch! I have only really seen these movies before, in fullscreen and with American dubbing. It's a whole new experience to see them as Japs saw them at the cinemas through the '60s!!!
There is an 8th movie, called "Super Monster", which doesn't seem available anywhere in widescreen & subbed?? I'd love to get it. I have it on VHS of course, but fullscreen & dubbed.
I also picked up the '60s ULTRAMAN complete series on DVD. This is a complete classic as well and the monsters are fucking berserk!!!
One of the best things about these '60s Jap monster movies is that the chicks in them are dropdead gorgeous - the best in the world!!!!

I just realised that the only kaijus I've ever seen have been dubs! That's pretty fucking sad really, although the dubs can be funny in their own way.
Another great thing about Kaiju monsters is that they always have the best attacks, like Godzilla's famous kick move from Godzilla Vs Megalon and Gamera's pole aerobics in Gamera Vs Guiron / Attack Of The Monsters.
Speaking of Ultraman, I saw an ep of this late 70s (probably 1978?) Spiderman tokusatsu a few months ago. And if I remember the girl villain in that was pretty decent looking.
I'll have to do some kaiju/tokusatsu research, haven't watched any for a while and still got loads to see...

I like the American dubbing too, it is kinda cheesey but adds to the ol' classic retro "flavour" of these gems... In the best of all possible worlds, I'd like the option of original American dubs and Jap language with subs, like what Classic Media has done with the recent Godzilla movies they have lovingly released on DVD - www.godzillaondvd.com/movies.htmlUnfortunately Classic Media only have the license for a few of the old Godzilla titles. I think arsehole companies like Sony & Warner are sitting on the rights for most of the others. It is unfortunate. I've got Sony's DVD release of "Godzilla Vs Hedorah" (aka the Smog Monster), and while it is nice quality and all, bits have been mysteriously edited out - obviously the "family value" fucks have been at it, cutting out, for instance, the bit where Hedorah flies over the kid's head, and he thrusts up a dagger and slices open Hedorah's belly. Obviously much to violent/disturbing to children & families in the Western world. Fucking cunts.

Yes I have heard of that abandoned "Godzilla Vs Gamera" project. It's a pity - it would have been a blast!
Morinkashi, I haven't kept tabs on up-and-coming Godzilla movies - I hope you don't mean another Hollywood version?? That Hollywood "Godzilla" with Matthew Broderick was a fucking abomination.
I thought that BOTH the very latest Godzilla ("Final Wars" 2004) and Gamera ("The Brave" 2006) were rather lame, compared to all the movies preceding...oh well... They still shat on that Hollywood piece of crap I suppose.

GAMERA MOVIES......Well I've recently undertaken extensive research into where to obtain definitive versions of these on DVD, and this is my results. Shōwa series1965: Giant Monster Gamera/Gamera The Invincible (Daikaijû Gamera) 1966: Gamera Vs Barugon/War Of The Monsters (Daikaijû kessen: Gamera tai Barugon) 1967: Gamera Vs Gaos/Return Of The Giant Monsters (Daikaijû kuchu kessan: Gamera tai Gyaosu) 1968: Gamera Vs Viras/Destroy All Planets (Gamera tai uchu kaijû Bairasu) 1969: Gamera Vs Guiron/Attack Of The Monsters (Gamera tai daiakuju Giron) 1970: Gamera Vs Jiger/Gamera Vs Monster X (Gamera tai Daimaju Jaiga) 1971: Gamera Vs Zigra (Gamera tai Shinkai kaijû Jigura) All 7 of these sheer classics are available in a nifty DVD boxset from Monsters In Motion. This is the cheapest I have found, and the quality is as advertised = fantastic. Widescreen, uncut, in Japanese language with English subtitles. I believe these movies have recently reappeared on DVD in Japan, but without any English subs or dubs, so quite worthless for us unfortunate gaijins! I think most of these movies are also available pretty cheap from Amazon etc, but what you get is the butchered full-screen versions with American dubbing, and inferior picture quality. 1980: Super Monster (Uchu kaijû Gamera) I can't find this, apart from "Elvira's Movie Macabre" double feature DVD - Gamera Super Monster together with the cool '67 English flick They Came From Beyond Space. Both films are, alas, shit quality full-screen versions with muffled audio. I really wanna find a definitive Jap version of Super Monster somewhere... Monsters In Motion don't have it. This is an unusual movie, often ragged in reviews, but I love it! Heisei series1995: Gamera: Guardian Of The Universe (Gamera daikaijû kuchu kessen) 1996: Gamera 2: Advent/Assault/Attack Of Legion (Gamera 2: Region shurai) 1999: Gamera 3: Revenge/Awakening Of Iris/Incomplete Struggle (Gamera 3: Iris kakusei) These 3 are pretty common. You can also buy them as a boxset, with both subs & dubs plus extras. They are all good films with amazing special FX - some of the best I've seen! Millennium series2006: Gamera The Brave/Little Braves (Gamera: Chiisaki yusha-tachi) Easy to find I think, but subbed only. Some nice action scenes, but overall a disappointment. Too glam. Silliness. Cringe-worthy at times. Oh well... (I hear it bombed at the Japanese box office!)

there is another movie coming up about Godzilla, 2-3 years from now i believe. Hmm, Morinkashi you don't happen to mean the movie due out in the new year called "Cloverfield"? This actually looks pretty cool from what little I've gleaned. I think it was at first mistakenly rumoured to have been a sequel to that shithouse American "Godzilla" movie, but in fact is a totally new monster movie that has been kept under wraps and is about to be released! The Host, Cloverfield... Is this a new genre starting up? I HOPE SO!!!

It's not a perfect list tho'. Maybe I'll update it. One movie that is being released in just a few weeks is LATITUDE ZERO, by those legends at Tokyo Shock! I have been waiting for this for years!

Isn't the world meant to blow up in 2011, according to the Mayas?

well, the Mayas died off, so i dont know what to think...... they could have been wrong, like every other person that thought the Apocolypse was on a specific date.
